Uxbridge Residents Continue To Give Back

For the last few years Uxbridge has played a very large role in sending a health team to the rural areas of Ghana to support the efforts of GRID and NEA

Uxbridge has sent a fourth team of health care professionals to Ghana.  The Team lead by Dr. Jennifer Wilson (Canada), Dr. Andrew Kingsnorth (England) is on a medical, surgical, dental, eye mission to serve the people of Northern Ghana.

The team will conduct Free  health clinics in Ghana, West Africa upon their arrival.

This years health team is en-route to the rural area in Ghana that Grid works in and you can follow them through posts on the Grid Web Site or the individuals who are leading the teams. Jennifer Wilson the leader of the Medical Team and Jacques Lapointe who writes about the preparations for the arrival of the team.

Little did I know back in 2000 when I traveled to Ghana to help build a food storage building and teach English for a short period of time that Uxbridge would play such a big part in the health of some small rural communities In Northern Ghana.

From Reflections of Another World 

During a seventeen-day period from June 18th to July 7th 2000 Team Ghana members provided volunteer labour in the construction of a 70ft. long x 30ft. wide x 20ft. high concrete block food security building. They also committed themselves to providing the necessary funds to cover the cost of all construction materials as well as some tools and equipment which they left with the people. Their hope in building this facility was to "help break the cycle of starvation" in the Deg area of N.W. Ghana.

One well worn, torn book shared by 5 or more eager children was all they had ever known....imagine the enthusiasm when we provided hundreds of books for the school, enough for each child to have and hold a book of their own. Thanks to the support of many individuals and companies we were able to provide a very large amount of educational material to the headmaster of the School.

Other team members were engaged in teaching English to children attending village schools. Since English is the language of instruction in the schools of Ghana the children from these remote villages face a great disadvantage without a basic knowledge of English. Even though their time there was short they were able to make a significant impact on these young lives

Halloween Safety Tips

• Warn children to not eat any of their treats before they get home.
• Examine all treats carefully before allowing children to eat them.
• use flame resistant costumes, masks, beards, and wigs.
• Avoid flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts to minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition.
• Make or buy costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists.
• Carry flashlights to see, and be seen, more easily.
• Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
• Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes.
• Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose fitting mask.
• Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft or flexible material.
• Smaller children should always be accompanied by an older responsible child or an adult.
• Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clothes-lines present dangers.
• Do not enter homes or apartments unless accompanied by an adult.

All Aboard The Halloween Special

Take A Ghostly Train Ride aboard the Only Greater Toronto Tourist Railway The Uxbridge Heritage Train.

The Uxbridge Heritage train has returned to the station from last weekends ghostly ride through the Uxbridge Moraine. This weekend coming it will once again take all the little Ghosts and Ghouls for a ride on board the decorated trains. Passengers are invited to join the crew and children 12 and under get free ride if dressed up in their Halloween finest. (only 2 per adult)

York Durham Railway Family Halloween Trains

 The York Durham Heritage Railway offers seasonal scheduled train rides as well as special events rides. such as the Halloween ride and the upcoming ride with "Santa". The equipment is available for movie shoots and has been used in movie productions, music and video shoots as well as for magazine spreads.

Some of the York Durham Heritage Railway Rolling Stock includes a heritage coach from the 1950's, a vintage Pullman Coach built in 1919, and a baggage car built in 1957. The three locomotives were all built in the early 50's to by Montreal Locomotive works and one by American Locomotive.

Uxbridge History And Heritage - "Breaking The Silence" 

With Remembrance Day approaching The Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society is presenting a timely opportunity to spend some time with local author, teacher, journalist and broadcaster Ted Barris as he discusses his book "Breaking The Silence" Just one of several non fiction books he has authored which deal with Canadians and the part they have played in global and regional conflicts in places such as Europe, Korea and Afghanistan.  

From the Great Wars to Afghanistan few veterans talk about their war time experiences. Barris has begun to break that silence and talk about the men and women who have served, some giving a little some giving it all, to help preserve our freedoms and way of life. Material for "Breaking The Silence" is based on interviews with nearly 3,000 veterans over the years who have shared their memories in interviews with Barris.

Ted Barris Resides in Uxbridge and is a contributing columnist 'The Barris Beat" in the Uxbridge Cosmos

History, Heritage And The Arts - Go Hand In Hand In Uxbridge Ontario For Halloween

The Foster Memorial a large mausoleum built by Thomas Foster as a resting place for his Wife and Daughter contains three crypts on the main floor and six in the basement. Inspired by the Taj Mahal in India and Christian Byzantine churches it is said to be the only structure of its kind in Canada and if it were on a main highway it would fast become a National Treasure.

This Friday you can enjoy some of our rich History and Heritage while taking in a Halloween Special at The Foster Memorial.  Billed as 'An Evening To Scare You', you will enjoy a special reading & music with Jane Loewen.

The next scheduled event at the Foster is the ever popular Reading of Charles Dickens,"A Christmas Carol" by the Ladies of the Foster along with some old fashioned Christmas Carols from around the world with Jane Loewan on Sunday November 28 at 2:00pm

Since the Township Of Uxbridge took over the maintenance and upkeep of this wonderful Byzantine styled structure it is used for the popular Fridays at the Foster, special musical events, movie shoots and weddings.

Average Prices Up From This Time Last Year

The GTA  Market is currently in a state of flux with mixed indicators showing up.

While year over year sales for the year are up the number of sales to date in the month are down.  The average sale price for October Mid Month transactions is also up from the first 14 days of October in 2009.

The last Friday concert of the regular schedule features Ewan Dawson. Dawson has captured first place in nearly every single classical competition across the country. He also captured 3rd in Winfield, Kansas at the 38th annual Finger Style Guitar Championship.

Dawson started out playing Heavy Metal and Hard Rock and now after working his way through the structured discipline of classical training has expanded to include Bluegrass, Canadian Folk, Techno, Trance, Video Game, and contemporary finger style music.

It's To Late To Mail In Your Ballot! - But it is not to late to Vote

Make Your Vote Count - Make Sure Your Voice Is Heard!

"Uxbridge is king of the ballot box", cries the headline of a Toronto Star article. With almost 50% of those eligible casting a ballot in 2006 Uxbridge is king of the ballot box in Durham region with Brock coming in a very close second. While this is good it also maens that slight;y over 50% did not Vote.

The turnout in Ajax, the lowest in the Region, was less than 25%. To try and get Voters out they even posted a Video featuring Farley Flex (Canadian Idol Judge) along with other celebrities and local residents on YOUTUBE. Meanwhile Uxbridge posted a how to Video explaining how to fill out your mail in ballot

In his post Will The Face Of Council Change on October 25th Barrie points out the potential for a new face and direction for the next Uxbridge council.

"IS IT TIME FOR A CHANGE

It is possible that the face of council will change drastically this year with all wards being contested as are both the regional and mayors seat.

It will be interesting to see how many of the old guard are returned. It will also be interesting to see if the new council will have a balance that will represent all ages and all desires.

He encourages you to have your say as the incoming council will define what the Uxbridge of the future will look like and encourages everyone to ensure their voice is heard

HAVE YOUR SAY IN THE FUTURE FACE OF UXBRIDGE

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT AND VOTE

Will Uxbridge be able to retain that which appealed to the new residents when they were considering Uxbridge as a place to live. Only time will tell as the next few years under the direction of who ever is elected will define what Uxbridge will be like going into the future."

If you are new to Uxbridge you may not know the Municipal Election process is conducted by mail in Ballot. By now you should have received your mail in ballot kit in the mail.

The following are  eligible to vote

Persons who are

• 18 years of age on or before October 25th
• a Canadian Citizen
• a resident or the owner or the tenant of land in the Township of Uxbridge
• not prohibited from voting

If you meet the criteria above and have not received a mail in kit you will have to go to the municipal Offices to

• ensure you are on the voters list or to get your name added
• to obtain your mail in kit
